Wars of the Roses
14 May 2010
Soldiers from the Yorkshire and Lancaster Regiments battled it out in the boxing ring in an action packed fundraiser for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and two Regimental Associations, which raised almost £50,000!
Chairman of this Wars of the Roses evening, Lieutenant Colonel Nigel Smith commented:
“It was a great evening. Whilst it’s about raising money for soldiers’ charities, it’s also about building Regimental profiles and friendships. An appearance by Lance Corporal ‘Freddy’ Craig Lundberg, an infantryman from the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment blinded in Iraq, helped reaffirm that the event is about showing support for the man on the street who when he decides to become a soldier is literally putting his life on the line for us.”
Leeds United Football Club played host to the event at Elland Road which, 500 years after The Wars of the Roses, once again ended in a Lancastrian victory. However, the result is only part of the story, as Northern warriors from both sides of the Pennines fought bravely for the one aim of raising money for their comrades in arms and their families.
Earlier on Saturday, during the Leeds United game against MK Dons, operational service medals were presented to members of the Yorkshire Regiment who had recently returned from service in Afghanistan.
