Prince Harry stepped out in front of 40,000 people to throw the first ball at the New York Mets’ Citi Field stadium. The eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed the ABF The Soldiers’ Charity logo on the sleeve of his throwing arm!

Off the pitch, Prince Harry has been accompanied on his US trip by The Soldiers’ Charity ambassador, Captain Kate Philp who became the first female amputee after losing a leg in Afghanistan.

They made the trip to see if there are any lessons that can be learned for improving the welfare of UK servicemen and women. In particular they paid a visit to Achilles International who enable disabled people to take part in sports and have developed specialised programs for war veterans. The trip was made in association with Walking with the Wounded, a polar adventure of which HRH Prince Harry is Patron. Their aim is “to successfully reach the North Pole with two wounded soldiers, which will make them the first amputees to reach the Pole.”

“That achievement will perfectly illustrate just how remarkable these young men and women are.”
