The Cape Epic 2010

1000km of off road racing and a climb of 1,600 metres over just 8 days. This is another example of how far our supporters will go to support fellow soldiers in need of help.

Phil Marland of 29 Regt Royal Logistic Corps, based at South Cerney, together with Tony Ireland RLC, now posted to sunny Cyprus, took on the huge challenge of the Cape Epic Mountain Bike Ride in South Africa earlier this year.

Their aim was to raise money to benefit service charities which will give their comrades help in times of need.

The Cape Epic is described as “Africa’s magical and untamed mountain bike ride”

1000km of off road racing, mountain climbs totaling 16000 metres (twice the height of Mount Everest) all in 8 days. The race took them through the unspoilt wilderness along South Africa’s southern coast in, what is, mountain bikings equivalent of the Tour de France.

Their great efforts resulted in them being the top British team in the final results although many professional riders competed. What is more, they raised in excess of £9,000 for their chosen charities. I
