World record rowing attempt turns into ‘world’s longest gym session’ after tech failure

100 Peaks rowing challenge

Technical difficulties meant a world record rowing event, which launched the 100 Peaks Challenge, had to be turned into the world’s longest continuous gym session.

Athlete Barrie Williams attempted to complete more than 300,000 metres over 24 continuous hours on a rowing machine at the Corporal Budd VC Gym in Colchester. But minutes into the challenge the technology tracking his distance failed three times.

Barrie fought on despite knowing he had no hope of breaking the record. The 100 Peaks Challenge is an epic 25-day trek across 100 peaks of the British Isles which aims to raise £100,000 for both ABF The Soldier’s Charity and Support Our Paras.

Karl Rushen, who created the Challenge said: “Unfortunately, in the end, it became the single longest gym session.”
